The Old Church in Angles, Vendee
Here are a few of our memories of the great times that we have spent in our gite here in Angles.

The small town of Angles has many attractions, including an 11th Century church and twice weekly markets. In summer there are many local fêtes and festivals - with music and fireworks.

Next door to the gite is the Village Cave - Wine Cellar! Here you will be able to taste some of the locally produced wines, as well as some more well known vintages! Look out for the local Mourat wines - they're very good!

Local Wildlife on the Marais
Sitting between the sea and the reclaimed marshlands, Angles is the ideal base to explore this beautiful part of the Vendée. The area is very flat, so is great for cycling and exploring on foot.

The town is a bustling hub for the locals, and on market day the centre comes alive with the many stalls laid out in the streets. Fresh local produce and regional specialities are on offer, as well as clothes and lots of freshly caught seafood.

Angles has retained its village feel even though it has developed into a small town and there are now many small shops in the centre - an excellent bakery, a butchers, fish mongers, small supermarket and several restaurants and bars.

Tour de Moricq
Within a short drive, or cycle from Angles you are in the middle of a fantastic rural landscape, with many roadside canals and small lakes teeming with wildlife. The area is famous for its migratory birds as well as its many fields of sunflowers.

There is a great picnic spot in the grounds of the 15th Century Moricq Tower, along with many sign-posted cycle paths. If you want to spend an afternoon quietly fishing or reading, the banks of the local canals are a perfect location.
Ice Creams at La Tranche sur Mer
For a lively day or evening out, we would always choose to visit La Tranche sur Mer. It's only a 10 minute drive away and has everything that you'd expect a bustling seaside town to have: Ice cream parlours, souvenir shops, a wide choice of bars and restaurants and plenty of entertainment - both during the day and into the evening.

The beaches are fantastic and you can surf, body board, relax, make sand castles or explore the many rock pools at low tide. They stretch for miles and are never too crowded in summer. Visit in the mornings to avoid the scramble for the car parks!

We had another fantastic fortnight - if a bit hot! We seamed to acquire a cat - although we did nothing to attract it.
Too hot to cook on BBQ - Just sat around really - fruit & veg from the market. Thank goodness we have survived the past three years. Here's to the next.

This was a very last minute booking, what a find it was! Like it was meant to be.
The property is fantastically positioned in the centre of a bustling village with a popular market twice a week. "Cave' next door does local and regional wines, very welcoming.
We quickly settled into a morning routine of a coffee at the bar and selections of goodies at the boulangerie before heading off for a walk. Walks we liked: Port Bourgenay, Lac du Finfarine, The Dukes at La Faute sur Mer. We stayed with our spaniel who loved the walks and beaches.
Our favourite beaches were: Le Rocher and Beach at St Vincent.
If you venture to the Ile de Ré - it's a 90 minute drive. Best to go early as it gets busy and parking is at a premium. The toll is €16.
We loved our stay. It's the 2nd time visiting the region. First with our dog. Beaches are dog friendly as are restaurants with outside seating. The Veterinary centre in Angles was excellent, easy to book with the help of Annette. Highly recommended.
Annette was quick to respond to a query on the vets. She was very communicative during both booking and departing. Thank you for having us.

A fantastic week at the gîte des Forges - we're just very sad it wasn't two weeks!
We know the area fairly well, so it has been a pleasure to revisit old haunts, We have really enjoyed the beach at Les Conches. Bourgenay/Query Pigeon is also well worth a visit. The beach at La Terrière is great but this is now a paying car park. The others are free to park at.
The Cave next door is excellent value. The market in Angles (Sunday & Wednesday am) are great for veg/fruit and be sure to keep an eye out for the brocante at the football stadium (Fridays during peak season)
We ate out in La Tranche this week. The Hotel de l'Atlantique is good for fish. The Grill de la Forge is good for steak and burgers. Tonight we visited Pizza Rico - great pasta & pizza. Be sure to enjoy an ice cream from one of the shops towards the seafront.
Looking forward to our next visit.

Brilliant place to stay, we loved it! The cave next door is brilliant fun, and great value.

Your longest visitors!!
Living here is slightly different to holidays but we have still managed to enjoy ourselves and make use of the local amenities. We would like to return one day especially to see the lovely neighbours - Collette & Philippe.
David & Clare. September 2019
Lovely little gîte - secluded and very quiet. Well equipped with a comfortable bed.
The village of La Tranche is beautiful - well worth a visit. Les Sables d'Olonne was closed when we visited on Monday! Although the promenade was lovely.
Found a wonderful beach at La Faute sur Mer after trailing around at L'Aiguillon and being disappointed at the Porte d'Aiguillon. This was the Handicappé Plage at La Faute sur Mer on the road from La Tranche. The beach was idyllic - later we had a lovely meal - very reasonably priced at the Cul de Poule restaurant on the main street just down from the casino. The waitresses were friendly, polite and spoke English very well. Definitely one to go back to. This beach has to be our favourite so far.
The little bakery next to the PMU sells gorgeous strawberry cakes - how I only had one all week I'll never know.
Visited the Cambuse restaurant for our last night. The Fois Gras was beautiful - sadly the Fishman had not been so we ended up having Faux Fillet de Boeuf.
All in all, we've had a wonderful week here - the weather has been warm to roasting - and the area is just beautiful - Feel Worth another visit.
Thank you Annette for helping us out with the induction hob!!

Mel & Family. August 2019.
Lovely village and favourite restaurant 'La Trattoria' was very child friendly.
Favourite beaches:
Les Conches - huge waves and body boarding
Les Roullieres - at La Tranche sur Mer
WIBIT Splash Park and lagoon beach at L'Aiguillon sur Mer.
Fab festival in the village with live music and dancing with tables to eat lining the square!
Weather has been amazing!

The Miles Family. August 2019.
Restaurant in the village is good value. Patron will practise his English.
Visit the Steile on the way to Les Conches and the cemetery in the village. Not a lot of fun for the children perhaps, but the village really appreciated the Commonwealth WWII loses. Google Helifax 9527. Really fascinating.
Ollie & Helen. August 2018.
Amazing week in Angles. Weather was up and down, but even when cloudy the sea was great! (Waves made it easy to get in!). Favourite beach was Les Conches - clean and lovely sandy place to relax. Hired canoes at the Venise Verte - so beautiful there. Great Stay!!

Pinkerton Family. August 2018.
We stayed in Curzon last year & the year before and all of us agree staying in your beautiful gite in a very welcoming village has been a wonderful change and experience. The house had all we needed and was beautifully presented when we arrived. weather has been fab, would recommend heading into the village on market days. A wonderful place to live for 2 weeks.
PS: Wine Cave next door is a bargain and fabulous!!

Another lovely stay at Gite des Forges, Angles. We shall be back!

Melanie & Michael, Leics.
We have had a lovely fortnight, thank you. The weather was a bit unsettled but much worse at home!
There is everything you need within a five minute walk. All the beaches are within a 10 minute drive.
Recommend: Les Roches beach, Les Conches beach, all local shops, market on Sunday & Wednesday, The Stele - war graves in the cemetery.
We really didn't want to go home, but the lawn and hedges call!
August/Sept 2016. The Shrigley Family, Bucks.
Another wonderful stay for us! Wonderful weather has meant lots of time at the beach - we particularly have enjoyed Les Conches this year.
The bakery is as always great, as is La Trattoria.
For the first time we visited the Puy du Fou which was fantastic and if you have the time I would recommend it!
We also enjoyed the canoeing at Longueville this year and had a relaxing afternoon at the pool in La Tranche, so another great stay for us.
August 2016. The Redding Family, Notts.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Angles. We have visited local beaches but our favourite is at Jard sur Mer. We have enjoyed he market on Sunday and Wednesday morning. We had delicious meals at La Cambuse and La Trattoria. The children had great fun on the Wibit at L’Aiguillon sur Mer! (Inflatable assault course on water)
Bar PMU is great for coffee and the occasional glass of wine! The cave next door is a must. Thank you - we’ve loved this week - a region of France we’ve not visited before.
PS: we thought the Creperie next to the church was poor value.
August 2016. The Davis Family, Bristol.
We have enjoyed a lovely week here in Angles. The house has been perfect for us and we have really enjoyed shopping in Angles (butchers and bakery are fantastic!) and eating out in the garden in the evening.
We’ve also had fun playing games in the garden and resting in the shade of the beautiful tree outside. We’ve not ventured very far as the children have been happy playing and body-boarding at Les Conches, so a relaxing week for us all.
The weather has been mixed with some cooler (and very windy) days on the beach, and others with perfect blue sky and full sun.
We’ve loved the house and this area and we hope to return soon!
July 2016. The Riley Family, Somerset.
We first discovered La Vendée in about 1992 and have been returning regularly to this area since. We are never disappointed and love the atmosphere of Angles with its busy social calendar throughout the summer. The weather has been amazing with the first few days bathed in sunshine and heat exceeding 40 degrees in the shade. Since then it has settled to an excellent 25/28 degrees which has enabled us to travel around. Our grand daughter joined us in week 2 and we were delighted to be able to shop each morning at the Patisserie with such delicious results.
We have enjoyed, as always, La Tranche - probably the best beach for small children, Les Conches with fun body boarding and surfing and L’Aiguillon sur Mer with the lovely lagoon. Longueville sur Mer also has interesting fossil beaches (between Les Conches and St Vincent sur Jard). Clemenceau’s house is interesting to visit and the beach is excellent at low tide - with rock pools to explore.
Last Sunday we attended the 75th Anniversary of the Halifax RAF plane shot down in 1941. The memorial is along the road to Les Conches and there are war graves in the cemetery. The lavish ceremony included a large English contingency and numerous French officials, bands and banners and choirs. There was a very informative exhibition in the tourist office and mobile exhibition of jeeps, tanks and WWII memorabilia.
We have very much enjoyed the various markets, a guinguette open air dance and night market. There was also a puppet show and circus.
We enjoyed a visit to The 10th Century Abbey at Maillezais and the old port where flat bottomed boats can be hired to explore the canals.
Thank you Rebecca and Annette for such an excellent gite - certainly giving me a wonderful taste of Vendée life at the heart of the community.
Excellent wine next door!
July 2015. The McCloskey Family.
What a great stay we have had at Gite des Forges. The local restaurants were fab - especially Chaumod - gorgeous food and so friendly.
We would recommend all of the local beaches but our favourite one was Plage des Mines in Jard sur Mer. Having holidayed in this region 28 years ago going back to Plage des Mines brought back many happy memories.
Thank you for providing such a fab house for us to stay in.
August 2015. The Vickerstaffs & McGonigal Families, London.
We have really enjoyed staying in your house! It’s very comfortable and it has everything we have needed. We have also enjoyed eating at the local restaurant up the road - The Cambuse.
The ‘Marché’ on Wednesday morning is excellent - with a wide range of foods as well as clothing, artefacts etc..
Our sons enjoy surfing, so Les Conches beach has been perfect for them. This is our 5th visit to this area, so no doubt we shall be back!
PS: The next door neighbours were very helpful when we needed the phone number for a taxi!
August 2015. The Thomason Family. Bognor Regis.
We’ve had a lovely stay. The village has everything you need - the market on Wednesday was fab.
Le Rocher beach was perfect for us, the Château at Talmont St Hilaire was brilliant for kids and adults.
Puy du Fou was perfectly reachable from here - great fun if you don’t mind queues.
August 2015. The Shrigley Family. Bucks.
We have loved our second stay at your lovely gite.
The weather has been perfect this year, so lots of opportunity to spend time at the beach. Our favourites have been Le Rocher (for rock pools) and La Terrière for the swimming!!
We ventured over to the Ile de Ré on the ferry from La Tranche. St Martin was lovely and is well worth the trip if you love boutique shopping and seafood restaurants, as well as very pretty town of St Martin.
Both restaurants in the main square have been fantastic especially the one with the terrace at the back, where the food was plentiful and they are very friendly to children.
The bakery at the top of the street is also fabulous!
Thank you for a great stay - my boys would have loved more of a football pitch in the garden, but we have eaten outside lots this year which has been lovely.
PS: The wine cave next door is also fantastic & great value!
Aug/September 2015. David & Jennie. Cornwall.
Another lovely holiday in the Vendée. The weather has been perfect every single day - blue skies and warm sun.
Our accommodation has been excellent, although on arrival we wondered if we would ever be able to unlock the door!.
We have enjoyed delicious meals at La Cambuse and La Trattoria. Meat from the butcher in Angles was excellent, as were bread and cakes from the bakers at the top of the road.
Sad to be leaving but we shall be back!
